Politics as Monkey Business: Citizen Perceptions of Political Lying and Attitudes Toward Democracy

This NWO-funded project examines how citizens perceive political lying in their everyday engagement with politics, and what these perceptions mean for their democratic attitudes.
The project investigates:
- How citizens form perceptions of political honesty and dishonesty
- Whether partisan considerations shape perceptions of political honesty
- What the consequences of perceived political dishonesty are for democratic support and political trust
This project forms a direct predecessor to the larger ERC-funded DEMO-LIES project.
Methods
Experience Sampling Method
Panel diary study tracking citizens' everyday encounters with political lying and their real-time evaluations of political honesty.
Survey Experiment
Pre-registered experimental design to causally identify the effects of political lying accusations on citizens' democratic attitudes.
